According to a 2019 Deutsch Bank study, Zurich is the most expensive city to go out on a date. An average night out costs over $200 based on “cab rides, dinner/lunch for two at a pub or diner, soft drinks, two movie tickets and a couple of beers.” That’s ahead of New York ($143), London ($138), and San Francisco ($138).
This study is simply absurd. As a former resident of Zurich, I can tell you that you can go on a date for far, far less.
In this article, I will cover 20 cheap date ideas for a fun night in (or out) that is budget friendly.
1. Go skating or roller skating
Skating/roller-skating is great fun, especially if you or your significant other do not know how to! Share plenty of laughs as you watch each other slip and slide across the rink.
Giving back improves our happiness and builds stronger connections. So why not make a day out of helping others? You can volunteer at your local food bank or animal shelter. Not only is this activity free, but you will be making a difference in someone else’s life!
3. Spa night
Have fun giving each other face scrubs and body massages! Maybe even a pedicure.
4. Go hiking
Hiking is an excellent outdoor sport. Not only is it great exercise for your heart, but you also get to enjoy some breathtaking views in nature.
5. Movie night
This is my go-to option on a rainy day or when I’m just feeling lazy. Cuddle up on the couch and put on your favourite movie on Netflix! Don’t forget the microwavable popcorn too!
6. Visit a museum
Many museums are open to the public for free or a small nominal fee. Play tourist for a day at the local museum.
7. Board games night
Here is where you get to see your significant other’s competitive streak kick in. Why not challenge him/her to a game of Monopoly or Scrabble?
8. Make desserts
What’s your favorite dessert? Half the fun of eating dessert is making it! Why not decorate a sundae together or bake a cake?
9. Visit a bookstore/library
If you’re a fan of reading, go to the library and have fun poring over the aisles and aisles of books.
10. Karaoke night
Show off your singing skills by having a karaoke night at home! Take turns picking your favourite songs on YouTube.
Pro tip: type the name of the song you want + “karaoke” or “karaoke with lyrics” on YouTube 😉
Bowling is one of my favorite date ideas! It’s so fun walking around in bowling shoes and competing to see who can get the most strikes!
12. Go house shopping
Have fun browsing the listings and fantasizing about a life together in your dream home. If there’s an open house nearby, you can even go and check it out together.
13. Take a stroll around town
Be a tourist in your own city! Take a walk down a neighbourhood that you don’t normally go to and check out the cute parks/cafes/stores.
14. Play billiards/pool
Another cheap date idea is to play a round of billiards or pool at the local pub.
15. Take a class together
Sign up for a class together and share the experience of learning something new. Maybe sign up for a pottery class, painting class, cooking class, or even a language class!
16. Go for a bike ride
Have fun with your date while enjoying the scenery and getting a little bit of exercise too!
17. Go furniture shopping
I don’t know about you, but I love spending hours and hours at IKEA.
Once you’re done fantasizing about your future home together, don’t forget to stop by the cafeteria for a cheap meal (usually $1-2).
18. Make a scrapbook
Take a stroll down memory lane as you put together a scrapbook with your favorite photos, movie tickets, etc.
Pick a recipe from scratch and cook it together. If you pick a complicated recipe, the date will be even more fun!
20. Have a photo shoot
Walk around the city pretending to be an influencer and taking ridiculous photos! This makes for great laughs!
