This post contains affiliate links, which means I may receive a small commission, at no cost to you, if you make a purchase through a link. Please read my disclosure for more details(Last Updated On: October 18, 2018)
So, it’s my third month blogging and in my income report from April 2018, I mentioned that my goal was to get ONE affiliate sale.
Well guess what? Within 3 days, I got 3 affiliate sales (it was for this ebook)!
I couldn’t believe my luck. I literally thought I was dreaming when it happened.
When the first sale, I thought that it was just pure luck. When the second one happened, I knew I was onto something. Then, the third sale came and now I’m certain that I will be able to make money from affiliate marketing going forward.
[EDIT]: A few days later I bought Michelle’s super popular Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing course and it helped me to achieve $400 in affiliate sales in my third month blogging!

What is an affiliate sale?
An affiliate sale (or sometimes known as affiliate marketing) is when you promote someone else’s product or service. If someone (your reader) purchases this product or service through your referral link, then you earn a commission. Commissions vary greatly from company to company, some less than 5% and some programs offer over 40% on the sale value.
How did I get my first affiliate sale?
Well, first, I posted my April 2018 income report. In this report, I mentioned that I earned $5 blogging and that I am starting to see a huge boost in blog traffic coming from Pinterest (in the last week of April 2018 I was getting around 200 visitors per day from Pinterest and now, a week later, I’m at around 300 visitors per day).
In my income report, I mentioned that I had bought Carly’s Pinteresting Strategies ebook and how it helped me TREMENDOUSLY with growing my Pinterest audience. See below:
I purchased Pinteresting Strategies by Carly who manually pinned her way to 200,000+ page views per month. I have to say that I personally prefer manually pinning on Pinterest and her ebook is definitely a game changer for me. The strategies discussed in the ebook are ones that I haven’t read anywhere else on the Internet (and trust me, I’ve read A LOT of articles). Also, for the price of only $32, this ebook is a steal. I will definitely be writing a post in a few days about how exactly this course changed my blog traffic and brought me ~200 visitors per day to my brand new blog (and within 9 days of implementing the strategies).
I totally didn’t expect anything from this post. In fact, I truly just posted it to share my progress after my second month of blogging. And literally, WITHIN ONE HOUR of posting this blog post, I got my first affiliate sale:
I was so happy that I even had to share this exciting news on Facebook!
Why did someone buy the ebook?
1. I knew my audience well
I know that a lot of my readers are in the same boat as me and wanting to learn how start a profitable blog and grow their traffic. In my post, I shared a helpful tip about what worked for me and made a recommendation. My readers trusted me and clicked on the link. The rest is history.
2. I genuinely believed in the product
Carly’s ebook is one that I believe in 100% and it shows through my posts.
In fact, even if I wasn’t part of her affiliate program, I would still promote this book to new bloggers looking to grow their Pinterest traffic.
You can tell by my posts that I love her book so much and that’s why other people are taking my recommendation seriously!
3. I gave an honest opinion about the product
I mentioned all the things I loved about the product. My post was totally honest and I was 100% transparent about my blogging successes and failures for the month (mostly failures).
Then when I mentioned that the game changer for the month was Pinterest, people got curious and clicked the link!
4. I wasn’t sales-y at all
In my post, I made the recommendation for the ebook but I didn’t try to upsell it at all. I recommended the book as I would to a friend. I would never recommend something I don’t believe in just to make a few extra dollars off my reader.
5. I posted results
I showed how I started getting 200 visitors from Pinterest per day. Last month, I got 3,000 page views from Pinterest and it was only my second month blogging.
Affiliate networks worth joining
- Skimlinks – This is my favourite network. I love using Skimlinks because it turns any link from a qualified merchant into an affiliate link without you having to apply to individual programs.
- ShareASale – Just like Skimlinks, this is also a great network with many merchants to choose from.
- Ultimate Bundles – Ultimate Bundles offers high-quality ecourse and ebook bundles (such as the Genius Blogger’s Tool Kit) for a fraction of the price.
- Amazon Associates – Get paid for any purchases made through Amazon! Commissions vary but you can earn up to 10% on eligible purchases!
General tips on making affiliate sales
1. Don’t promote a product just for the commission
If you “trick” your reader into buying a product that really isn’t for them, they will never trust you again. Is it really worth damaging your reputation just for one sale?
2. Only promote products you love and would stand by
I would only promote products that I have already used, know, and love. I consider my readers like family and friends and I would NEVER deceive my family or friends into buying a product that I know isn’t good for them.
3. Don’t get too spammy
Don’t overload your blog with affiliate links. When I see this, I get pretty turned off and usually ignore what the blogger has to talk about.
Affiliate marketing isn’t as difficult as it sounds or looks! I got my first sale within 1 hour of posting my review on the Pinteresting Strategies ebook that I recommend. If you haven’t done so already, join the affiliate networks I recommended above (Skimlinks, ShareASale, Ultimate Bundles, Amazon Associates) and start blogging and making money!
[EDIT]: I also highly, highly, highly recommend Michelle’s Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing course. It helped me to achieve $400 in affiliate sales in my third month blogging!
