Since I mainly work from home and don’t have a set schedule, it’s been really difficult for me to find motivation sometimes. Thankfully, I have perfected a daily morning routine which helps me to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to conquer the day. Thanks to my daily routine, I finally have a sense of “stability” in my unpredictable life!
In this post, I will outline my daily morning routine: the first 10 things I do when I wake up. Having the perfect morning routine also helps me be more productive throughout the day so that I can accomplish more of my goals!
My Morning Routine In A Nutshell
1. Wake up
Anyone who knows me well will tell you that the thing I love doing most is sleeping. The thing I love doing second most is probably napping.
Sometimes I wonder if I have sleep apnea or some other sleep disorder because, I kid you not, I can literally sleep for 12+ hours per day and still wake up feeling tired.
The reason you might wake up feeling tired even though you’ve gotten ample amounts of sleep could be that you had waken up in the middle of a sleep cycle. Sleep cycles tend to last 90 minutes. To avoid waking up in the middle of your sleep cycle and feeling cranky and tired, set your alarm at a 90-minute interval. That means, set your alarm for either: 1.5 hours of sleep, 3 hours of sleep, 4.5 hours of sleep, 6 hours of sleep, 7.5 hours of sleep, 9 hours of sleep, and so on.
I usually set my alarm for 7.5 hours so that I make sure that I’m getting at least the recommended 6-7 hours of solid sleep. Setting my alarm for 7.5 hours from my bed time ensures that I’m not waking up in the middle of my sleep cycle. Doing this has made getting out of bed a whole lot easier!
I am all about meditation. I started meditating a few years ago when I was going through a tough time in my life. I made meditation a daily habit and it really helped me to reduce my anxiety, depression, stress, and much more.
These days, I try to meditate for last least 10-15 minutes every morning after waking up. Often, I feel so relaxed from meditation that I just fall right back to bed (whoops!).
If you’re looking for great meditation resources, I recommend getting started use the Calm app, or following Jon Kabat-Zinn’s MBSR course (it’s free – this is how I got started).
After my meditation I also like to do my daily affirmations to attract more money into my life! It’s working, I swear!
3. Wash my face
Finally, once I’m done relaxing, I get up and wash my face. I don’t really have a special face-washing regime. I literally just wash my face for 10 seconds and I’m good to go! What’s more, I don’t even use a cleanser! I found that after I stopped washing my face with a cleanser, my skin has started glowing more and looking more radiant 🙂
I know a lot of people like to shower in the morning to wake themselves up. I am more of a night showerer!
4. Eat breakfast
I cannot fully concentrate on doing anything productive without eating a healthy, hearty breakfast first.
My typical breakfast consists of a bowl of muesli with yogurt. I also eat a bunch of fruits (bananas, berries, or peaches) to go with!
5. Drink tea
I’m a tea addict. I drink at least 3-4 cups a day. And I LOVE LOVE LOVE making myself a cup of warm tea (or iced tea in the summer). My favourite tea is Japanese matcha green tea which I mix with soya milk & honey. SO good!
Making tea is the thing I look forward to most in my morning!
6. Write up a to-do list for the day
Every morning, I write up a new to-do list for myself.
I write up a new list every day because every day is different. I hate just reusing to-do lists from prior days because it makes me think “Oh geez, there are SO many items that I didn’t accomplish from the day before.”
By writing a brand new to-do list, it reinforces the feeling that I’m starting a new day, and to let go of any negative feelings the I might be holding from the previous day.
My to-do list usually consists of 5-10 items. The first few are the easy ones that I can get done straight away, and then the rest of tasks that might even take me a few days to accomplish.
I talk a bit more about my to-do list in a post written by my friend Laura: 7 Self-Care Tips for Bloggers and Women in Business – a must read!
I love reading but I can barely make time for it anymore. As a compromise, I’ve blocked off time in the morning to read one chapter from my current book every morning. This usually means I read for about 10-15 minutes per day! This also means that it can take me a few weeks or months to finish a book!
8. Study/personal development
As a PhD student, there is a lot to be learned. I’m currently studying Econometrics and I absolutely need to study this topic FIRST THING IN THE MORNING when I still have energy. If I don’t do it in the morning, I know that I would make excuses throughout the day to not get it done.
I also love studying languages so I block off some time to review grammar, vocabulary, etc. as well!
9. Catch up on emails, blog drama and other things
Finally, I will allow myself to “catch up” and check my emails, blog stats, Facebook messages, etc. After one night’s sleep, a lot has already gone by in the online world.
Being located in Switzerland and in another time zone means that most of the “action” online happens while I’m asleep. I usually spend at least 15-30 minutes catching up on anything important that I’ve missed!
10. Get dressed
Lastly, once I have knocked off my “morning to-dos,” I will get dressed and finally start my real day. I usually don’t spend too much time getting dressed because I have a tiny wardrobe consisting of only 10 or so outfits that I rotate from indefinitely.
Having a minimalist wardrobe has saved me so much time in the morning. I never have to waste time planning outfits because I only have a handful to choose from anyway!
I’m not a morning person at all which is why I need a morning routine to wake myself up and help increase my productivity for the rest of the day.
