We live in a gig economy, and everyone is trying to do something to earn a little extra money on the side. While things like ride-sharing and food delivery have turned into full-time jobs for some people, they are not always the answer.
Another industry that is growing rapidly is teaching English online. It is becoming increasingly popular because of all of its benefits. There are so many reasons to teach English online that you will want to sign up as soon as you’ve finished reading.
A good place to start is by doing some research to find the company and platform that suits you best. Is it VIPKid? Or maybe iTutorGroup? Or perhaps Whales English? Then you’ll want to visit their website and sign up to be a teacher. There you can find extensive information about their requirements, and learn about the hiring process.
But why is this an awesome gig? Keep reading for all the details!
1. Work From Home
Working from home is still work, especially in a position like this where you are on camera and can’t really, “go to work in your pajamas,” like so many work from home jobs promise.
Working from home does have its perks though, for instance, you save countless hours of commute every year. The time you save in your commute translates to money saved on gas as well as other savings like more time to cook means less need for expensive take out.
There are also little things that you can’t do when you are stuck at work like change a load of laundry in between teaching classes.
2. Set Your Own Schedule
This isn’t the most flexible job there is, but it is way more flexible than your traditional 9 to 5 job. Hours depend on the medium and the company with which you work.
Some companies only work during peak hours while some are 24/7. Most companies are a mix but require a certain number of hours with a percentage of those being during peak times.
No matter what company you work for, you will have some flexibility in the days and times you work, which is more than you can say for most jobs.
3. Make Money
Money is a motivating factor here, and the money is pretty good. Compared to many work from home jobs, teaching online pays extremely well.
Most work from home jobs trade the convenience of working from home for lower pay, but these jobs average about $15 per hour which is a nice monthly bonus. With some of these positions getting closer to $30 per hour with bonuses and incentives it is easy to see why teachers are lining up for these positions.
For the most part, the hours aren’t there to make this a full-time gig, but for that kind of money you can work part-time and still bring in a substantial paycheck.
4. Learn About Different Cultures
An often overlooked benefit of teaching English online is that you get to learn about the students and their culture while you are teaching. Studying from a book or watching a documentary on TV is not the same as learning from the people who live there everyday.
These insights are beneficial for work experience as well as personal growth. Some companies even offer programs where teachers can travel to the countries they are teaching and get some real-world experience with the people and their customs.
5. Great Work-Life Balance
Having a work-life balance is something that everyone strives for, but few can accomplish. Working at home teaching English online allows you to find that perfect balance.
Since there is little to no work outside of class time, it gives you more time to do family activities and be in the moment. Most of this work happens in the evening and weekends, so it frees up your weekdays to drop off and pick up the kids and get your other errands out of the way during the day.
Having a good work-life balance is nearly impossible, so a job that is constructed in a way that promotes a healthy relationship between both should be sought-after.
6. It’s Rewarding
Another intangible benefit that gets overlooked is the feeling of accomplishment as you see your students grow. All you need to do is read the reviews of online English teachers to see how rewarding this job is.
Not every position allows you to work with the same students every week, but if you are lucky enough to find a position like that you will have three to six months to watch them steadily comprehend more English in each session.
The look on a student’s face when you see the pride wash across their face gives you an unexplainable feeling of pride and joy. There are also no disciplinary issues in a program like this, so you get all of the benefits and none of the difficulties of a traditional classroom.
7. Easy to Get Started
Even if you are lucky enough to find a legitimate work from home job, the odds are that there will be a lot of steps to get started. I have even seen a few that require you to travel to a training center for an entire week to be trained before you can start.
Teaching English online has both educational and technical requirements, and training can vary depending on the company and platform. You’ll know those requirements going in. Once you’ve completed the interviews and onboarding you can start teaching on the same day.
8. Gain Work Experience
Most of these jobs prefer that you bring experience to the table, but not all of them. Teaching English online is a great way to get classroom experience if you don’t have any.
Any job experience is good experience, but these positions may give you the experience you need for a better paying online job or be the resumé builder that gets you a full-time teaching position you want.
So Much More
These are just some of the more prevalent reasons why you should apply to teach English online today. There are different benefits for different individuals, but the fact that there are so many speaks for itself. No commute and a better work-life balance are fantastic. Perhaps the biggest benefit is the extra income. You won’t truly know how much teaching online will change your life until you try it yourself, so don’t hesitate to start a rewarding career in this field today.
